| | | | NP | | Hot Springs | WA | 1923 | Remains from a wreck in the vicinity of Hot Springs, just west of Lester. Persons identifying the photograph believe the track is pictured running west to east from bottom to top, and the buildings in the far background are thought to be those which were once rented by the Darker family, until the Senior Mr. Darker passed away, leaving his son, Jim, a railroad fireman working out of Lester, to care for his widowed mother and siblings. In any event, the location is between Lester and Hot Springs; and the year is 1923 - by Dave Sprau per George Thompson. | wreck | | | | unknown | Tacoma | 1 | | |
| | | | NP | | Hot Springs | WA | 1920 | Hot Springs, two miles west of Lester, 1920. Track Inspectors Dominic Abinati, right and Pucci Sabatino. Dominic later became section foreman at Easton. He and his wife, Annie, and his cousin, Oronzo ("Lawrence"), who also was a sectionman for the NP in the Easton area for many years. Pucci (pronounced "poochie") proudly told his co-workers that he came from "Tuscany, North of Rome." He began as a trackwalker, patrolling the track from Lester to Kennedy when the Weston Loop made this distance several miles greater. Later, his duties were performed by motorized speeder, as seen in the photograph. Under Roadmaster John O. Davies, who later became a General Manager of the Burlington Northern, Pucci worked as section foreman at Lester, the position from which he retired. Jim Fredrickson recalls seeing the retired Pucci, who had moved to Tacoma, as a regular visitor at the Union Station: "He lived in an apartment uptown and used to come to the station regularly and sit in an old rocking chair in the depot concourse and watch the trains." Indeed, for Dominic and Pucci and many others who represent their era and work ethic, working for and taking care of the railroad, and watching the trains pass, was a way of life, which followed even into retirement. - by Dave Sprau per George and Walter Thompson. | Speeder | track inspectors | | | unknown | Tacoma | 1 | | |
| | | | NP | | Hot Springs | WA | ca 1916 | Hot Springs, two miles west of Lester, boarded up and abandoned. Probably about 1916. Prior to 1914 double-tracking of the Stampede - Lester segment, Hot Springs (rather than Lester) was considered one of the more major stations/towns on the west side of the Cascades. Rail travellers came here to visit the spa nad nearby hotel and soak in the reputedly theraputic suplhur springs. All changed when the hotel burned and was not rebuilt; at the same time, establishment of Lester as a major helper and fueling station at the :new: foot of the 2.2% grade caused closure of the Hot Springs depot. Lester residents then used the mineral springsas their private recreation spot until Tacoma Watershed personnel cracked down on suck use by bulldozing the spring entrance shut in 1970. One of the last regular users was Josef Melch, a retired railroad signalman and later sectionman, who used to walk from Lester to Hot Springs nearly every day for a bath. The ritual ended abruptly when, one day, Joe was discovered floating dead of an apparent heart attack in the steaming water. - Caption by Dave Sprau per George and Walter Thompson. | depot - combination | | | | unknown | Tacoma | 1 | | |

| | | | NP | 4009 | Lester | WA | ca 1924 | NP 4009 crosses Bridge 60, a steel pony truss over the Green River. During most of the Northern Pacific's lifetime, the term "West Switch at Lester" was synonymous with the term "End of double track." Present day railroaders mentally picture this location as being at the Green River Bridge, but it was not always quite so. For many years, double track ended at Milepost 60.3, about 800 feet east of the Green River Bridge. And here is proof: In about 1924, an eastward freight train stops at the former end of double track; a brakeman will alight and move the hand-throw switch between the left semaphore and the locomotive, and the train will start up the eastward track enroute Stampede Tunnel. The Green River bridge is out of view in the picture. Signs of some sort of a wreck lay at the base of signal 60.3; but this is NOT the same wreck visible at nearly the same location as shown in another photo of this series. | locomotive - steam | train - feight | Bridge 60 | | unknown | Tacoma | 1 | | freight |

During a 1990 meeting of former Lester people this photo was submitted to the group for possible identification of the children. | | | | NP | 2626 | Lester | WA | 12/13/1955 | Lester, December 13, 1955. NP Engines 2626 and 2601 doublehead what was known as the "Santa Claus Specials" - a yearly all-mail section of the passenger trains. Owing to the large amount of mail during this season, as well as the additional numbers of the travelling public, it was necessary for several weeks around Christmastime, to split the trains into separate passenger and mail sections. Judging from the absence of white or green flags on the lead engine, this train appears to be operating as the last section of eigher the North Coast Limited or the Mainstreeter. Both of the regular, passenger-carrying segments of these trains normally passed Lester just before daylight in wintertime. One year later, diesel locomotives had replaced steam to the extent that such a photograph was no longer possible; and scarcely a dozen years later, the U.S. Post Office no longer even utilized passenger trains for the shipment of mail. | | | | NP | | Lester | WA | 1924 | Lester Depot during a snowfall, 1924. Note the station platform lamp at extreme left. A few years after the photgraph was taken, the train order signal was replaced with a shorter model; the first time the semaphore blade was lowered to "stop" position, it struck the side of the building and thereby failed to lower all the way to horizontal. The solution? Somebody got a saw and uniformly shortened both blades, so that the westward blade (nearest the structure) no longer contacted the building. The usual procedure in plowing snow is t begin with the track nearest a hillside or other obstruction (in this case a cut of cars on one of the yard tracks), and plow snow away from this track even if it means covering the next track over with snow; the, plow that track and so on, until with the last pass over the last remiaing track, the entire right-of-way is cleared. In many locations this means that the snow is flung over the bank with the last sweep. Caption by Dave Sprau per George Thompson. | plow-snow-rotary | | | | unknown | Tacoma | 1 | | rotary |

| | | | BN | 9724 | New Stampede | WA | 1/19/1972 | Amtrak train No. 32, the Empire Builder, running against the current of traffic on the Westward track, passes Burlington Northern's rotary snowplow as both climb the west side of Stampede Pass at New Stampede station, Milepost 50, on January 19, 1972. When Amtrak took over passenger train operation in April 1971, it inherited - and used - former GN "Empire Builder" equipment sans the former GN SDP-45 engines which BN retained and returned to freight service. Therefore, what is pictured here is essentially a former GN passenger train using older GN passenger power renumbered for BN, running over the former Northern Pacific , which for a time was sole heir t East-West passenger service in the northwest. The train "returned" to former GN tracks at Sandpoint, Idaho. At the same time, similar former NP equipment was used on a "stub" train which operated over the former NP line between Minneapolis and Spokane. Although its run was eventually lenghtned to Seattle - ironically via Wenatchee, this "south line" train was afterward discontinued altogether.
