NP Valuation Reports
|
In the mid-1920s, the Interstate Commerace Commission proposed to set railroad freight rates based on a return on the companies inventment in faciflities and costs of operations. The NP made a series of valuation studies in 1926 to set the level of investment in each part of their system.
In 1926, the NP had twelve divisions which were reduced in 1932 to the eight divisions which continued till merger. For a history of the NP divisions, go to Stations & ROW on the left-menu of the Research Home Page.

NP Series 13000-13499 Box Car
|
¼” scale model built from a Chooch Ultra Scale kit produced in the late 1990’s. The basic body is composed of urethane castings from patterns done by Rick Leach. The kit came with injection molded styrene detail parts, white metal and brass castings along with the usual assortment of wire and strip styrene. I altered the kit due to some assembly errors on the underframe. I decided to scratchbuild a new underframe, end ladders and doors rather than sanding a ton of very small urethane castings. The model was finished with Accupaint Rich Oxide Brown with a touch of Oxide Brown. Decals are a special set done by Rick Leach. The trucks are San Juan Car Company Bettendorf U-Section trucks with Grandt Line Proto48 bracketed wheels. The working AAR Type-E couplers are from San Juan as well. By Gene Deimling, Los Gatos, CA.

It's Oct 1,1955 and 80 degs. The bags are packed, the kids are in the back seat asking if we're there yet. You look out the window and think, boy it sure would be nice to see a train about now. As you roll over the bridge Gilbert Narly is below trying to land that bass that eluted his father for years. Warren said, "He has to go 6 lbs if he's an ounce." Passing the Burma Shave signs Ole 'Buck ' Jones heads into Big Timber to quench his thirst and pickup more wire for fencing on his ranch. Earl Pitts, long haul trucker, wishes this rubber-necker would pull over. Ah, but the one armed rail fan is 'High Balling' to catch up with the Shields River turn after shooting it's caboose on bridge 51 and that guy with the air horn can just cool it ! And so goes another day on the Yellowstone Div.

NP5002 Z-5 in Live Steam
|
David Workman of Redmond, Oregon, and Larry Anderson started building the Class Z-5 Yellowstone shown here in 1/8th or 1.5"/1' Scale in October 2004. They built everything except for the boiler, frame and a few accessories which were purchased from Train Mountain where the parts had been sitting in the back shop for five to six years. All The parts of the project are shown in this photo gallery. Their model of NP5002 was finished and run under steam in June 2007. David found this to be a wonderful experience working with Larry who is an incredible machinist. If you have questions about this project email David at: dworkman@bendbroadband.com .

O-Scale NP-GN Layout
|
Duane is modeling the NP and GN in western Montana to eastern Washington in the late 40's-early 50's allowing steam and diesels. The GN will have the electrified division with two electric yards. All rolling stock is correct for the era and weathered. There is a 65-foot, 20-train hidden staging yard that will enable the dispatcher to bring trains out to the viewing area. From there, an engineer will take over and run the train thru the system and bring it back to disappear again in the staging yard. Three trains will run at the same time during operating sessions, while the dispatcher is making up and receiving trains in the staging yard.

This collection contains the images from Joe Caron's railroad slide collection owned by the Northern Pacific Railway Museum in Toppenish WA. Many of the slides were shot by Joe, but the collection also includes images from purchased slides and duplicated images from other collections. To locate images of specific items, use the column filtering by putting your cursor over the header at the top of the column you want to filter. Click the down-arrow when it appears and select "Show Filter Choices." Look down the list that appears and click the value you are seeking. You can filter multiple columns at one time. Mystery Photos of the NP
|
Introducing a feature from The Mainstreeter which has been an exciting activity on the Yahoo Groups discussion list, NP Telltale, and it seems fitting to share the fun with NPRHA members via our web site. In each issue of the Mainstreeter, Bill Kuebler introduces an NP photo without caption or identifying data which is repeated here with a very high resolution photo showing more information than possible in a printed photo. It will be up to you to figure out the basic what, where, when, and sometimes who of the photo. In addition, Bill may draw attention to some unusual detail in the photo and ask a bonus question or two about it. Readers will then have until the next Mainstreeter issue is published to solve the mystery by answering all the questions.
This is not meant to be interactive, but it should be engaging. Just solve the mystery on your own, a rather enjoyable activity that can become addictive. This is not meant to be a contest; there is no prize, but there will be a reward. The reward is not in getting the right answer, but in learning how to get right answers, so you can put that interpretive skill to work for your own future photo studies. Bring to the task all your knowledge of NP equipment, people, and operations, and all your NP materials. You will likely expand your reservoir of information in the process. Refer to books, photos, timetables, special instructions, maps, track data, etc., and confer with friends, to help you solve the mystery.
Each photo tells a story, and yet the photo doesn’t necessarily speak for itself. That’s where interpretation comes in. Most photos have far more detail in them (or implied by them) than initially meets the eye. Perhaps most important of all, learning to relate various categories of information to each other, rather than isolating and separating them as we railfans tend to do, will open up whole new vistas and possibilities for future NP photo study on your own. Thus, solving mysteries entails discovery. Historians and modelers, alike, can benefit from this process of discovery. And not least, of course, studying NP photos is just plain fun. What better way to spend one’s leisure time? Bill provides the answers in the indicated Mainstreeter issue.

NP Train Number Summary
|
This is a composite list of scheduled NP passenger and freight trains. The passenger trains operated by the NP in 1930 were compiled by John F. Strauss, Jr. and the freight train data comes from the NP Train Brief book issued June 23, 1969. Train numbers changed very little from the start of passenger service, but trains were added and removed from service from time to time. However, the Seattle to Portland mainline direction changed from west to east in 1932, changing affected train numbers.
