Design and development of the NP’s first true Supersteam, 4-8-4 locomotives which proved very successful.

As the war in Europe began, the NP needed more high-horsepower locomotives and ordered an all-weather version of the successful. The A-4 design had a number of differences from the A-2 and A-3s.

The class was ordered in early 1941 to add proven high speed power to the war effort. They had roller bearings and cast steel frames to resolve issues with the Z-6’s. They served their entire careers on the Rocky Mountain Division.
