Design and development of the NP’s 4-6-6-4, high-speed simple articulated locomotives. They combined high-power with speed to handle Time Freights on the Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain and Idaho Divisions. They were successful, but limited by weak frames and friction bearing in part of the class.

The class was ordered in early 1941 to add proven high speed power to the war effort. They had roller bearings and cast steel frames to resolve issues with the Z-6’s. They served their entire careers on the Rocky Mountain Division.

In early 1942, the NP saw it needed more high-speed power to handle the war-time freight tonnage and the War Production Board allow them to order additional units of the Z-7 design. The first order of 12 were delivered in 1943 with 8 delivered in 1944.
