We hope you have found the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association site easy to use and informative.

Resources On This Site

The web site is made up of three primary elements – document libraries, picture libraries and lists. Secondary elements include surveys, discussion boards and other features.

Document Libraries

Document libraries can contain any type of document, be it a NP history, meeting minutes, or just a written history from a veteran. The documents are uploaded to the web site by the web site administrators. Only administrators can upload documents to the document libraries. Here is a sample document library:

To view the document, simply click the title.

Picture Libraries

Picture libraries contain pictures. The pictures are uploaded to the web site by the web site administrators. Only administrators can upload pictures to the picture libraries. Here is a sample picture library:

There are three primary “views” for pictures – Details, Thumbnails and Filmstrip. To view a picture as big as possible, click the picture to view it and its properties individually. To print the picture on your local printer, just choose the File/Print menu item in your browser once you have browsed to the view that you want.

In a picture library with a lot of pictures, try the “View slide show” feature on the left navigation menu. Make sure to push the Play button  to start the slide show.

Lists

Lists are collections of any type of data stored on the site. Lists are great because they can be sorted to find just the data you are looking for. Here is a sample of a list:

In the list above, you can sort by “Wheel Type” to find all the 4-8-4 wheel arrangements that served on the NP, or “Type Name” to sort all the Northern locomotives into one group. To sort, just click the heading you want to sort by. To reverse the sort order, just click the heading again and it will sort in the opposite order.

A couple of notes about lists:

1)  To help the lists load quickly on your computer, only the first 100 rows of a list are typically displayed on one page. At the bottom of the list, on the extreme right hand corner of the list, will be a link to display the additional rows in the list. Something like this:

Just click the “Next” button to see the additional items.

2)  Also, you can use the “Filter” option to search for only certain matches in a column. For instance, you could list only the Manchester built locomotives. To filter a list, click the Filter option in the list title bar, and then drop down the column heading that you want to use. You can also filter on multiple columns. Clear a filter, just click Change Filter in the title bar and then set the filter to “All” for all columns.

3)  Note also that if you really get stuck, one way to just start over with filters and sorting of a list is to go back to the home page and re-find the list all over again. When the list is displayed again, it will go back to its original defaults.
